Curriculum Ideas

Here, you will find a variety of ideas for making "Nothing Special" a very special part of the learning process. This section will continue to grow, as more and more creative ideas from readers like YOU help add to the ever-expanding selection.

Ideas for discussion-starters:

Discuss the forward progression of the days of the week, and have your children keep a daily journal/blog about a week of their own.

Discuss the color of each shape, and find connections with personality traits commonly associated with these colors.

Have the children identify with one of the characters in the book, and write/tell about more examples they can think of related to the shape they chose.

Ask the children to find as many examples as they can (in a limited time if needed) of each shape in their own environment.

If a child is struggling with expressing an emotion or dealing with a delicate situation, have them relate as a protagonist/antagonist with one of the shapes in the story, and then either create a storyboard or "act out" the story with shape manipulatives.

Ask the children to find other hidden examples of each shape in the illustrations (There are MANY!).

Find the hidden pictures!!

Either verbally or written, allow the children to retell the story using other characters, names, etc... and relate it to their own lives.

Have the children rewrite the ending, and discuss why they did so the way they did.
